Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam

The doors open at 7:30 pm every Sunday and we start with our “Poetry Slam.” The “Featured Poet” will start roughly at 9:00 pm accompanied by the Jeff Robinson Trio. After the Featured Poet, we have our “Open Mic” also accompanied by the Jeff Robinson Trio. There’s $8 cover charge at the door, and the Lizard Lounge is a 21+ venue.

Vernon "VCR" Robinson is the Featured Poet on September 13, 2020, at the Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam Zoom Poetry Night.⁠

VCR (Vernon C. Robinson) is a Dorchester native born and raised in Boston. He has been writing, reciting and performing poetry/spoken word for two decades, not to mention that he’s been emceeing (rapping) for over 30 years. As a poet, VCR has performed at several local open mic spots and gathering as a feature and participant. Venues include Afrocentrics, the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, The Milky Way Lounge, Ogunnaike Galleria, Strand Theatre, Dudley Café, Haley House and more. He has poetically graced the same stage and opened up for such acts as Dead Prez, S.O.S. Band, Amiri Baraka, Pharoahe Monch, Suheir Hammad, Saul Williams, Lakeside, New Birth, Last Poets, Les Nubians, Jessica Care Moore, Georgia ME, and other well-known artists. Besides the Boston and Cambridge areas, he has taken his poetry at cities and states such as New York (including the famous Nuyorican Poets Café), Atlanta, Chicago, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Dallas, Cleveland, New Hampshire, Baltimore, Oakland, Los Angeles and surprisingly Cuba where he met the legendary Assata Shakur. He has created many annual gatherings which include Winter Words, Maylennium, Devotion…Black Love Day, Megacipher, SistaHood, Body Language, Afro-Cinema, Young Gifted & Black and The Red Black & Green Affair (a dedication to Marcus Garvey). His most recognized gathering is an ongoing event called VerBaLizAtiOn which is currently the longest-running open mic spot in the Boston area of nearly two decades. ⁠

Sara Kahlo is the Featured Poet on September 6, 20 $Sara Kahlo is the Featured Poet on September 6, 2020, at the Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam Zoom Poetry Night.⁠ ⁠ Sara is a studying Social Work Masters student at Boston University, who’s interested in using writing as a means of exploring loss, trauma, grief, and ones on identity. She has learned that writing and expressive art has given the power back to those who have fractured pieces of their identities after sexual trauma and domestic abuse. Sara hopes her work will connect and help mend others who have experienced such things in their own lives and give them hope and strength to move forward. Michael Warrior Bonds is the 2019 Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam Grand Champion and the 2019 Most Valuable Poet of Lizard Lounge. Warrior is a nationally respected poet and urban Grio from Roxbury/Boston Massachusetts. He is a community actionist, motivator, and self-published author of 2 books of poetry “Gunz, Poems & Rosez” and “The Write. ⁠

His work is also featured in “The Bandana Republic” (editors Louis Reyes Rivera & Bruce George co-creator of HBO Def Poetry Jam) and Word Against the Machine by Jane “Spoken Word” Grenier. Mr. Bonds is also the founder and CEO of “A Rite To Succeed Inc.” ARTS Inc is a nonprofit he built dedicated to raising and teaching Black boys to become Black Men and eradicate Black Male ignorance and low self-esteem. ⁠
