Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam

The doors open at 7:30 pm every Sunday and we start with our “Poetry Slam.” The “Featured Poet” will start roughly at 9:00 pm accompanied by the Jeff Robinson Trio. After the Featured Poet, we have our “Open Mic” also accompanied by the Jeff Robinson Trio. There’s $8 cover charge at the door, and the Lizard Lounge is a 21+ venue.

Instagram post 2184984003837257216_1043634276 Douglas Bishop is the Featured Poet at the Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam Sunday, December 1, 2019, https://poetryjam.org - As a teacher, Douglas Bishop has worked with students ranging in age from 1 to 90, but now teaches undergraduates at the University of Massachusetts. As a poet, he has performed in a variety of venues, from Glasgow to Guatemala, but now he’s mostly in Lowell, MA, at the Untitled Open Mic, where he is the Slam Master. He recently finished a doctorate in education, looking at the development of literate identity in young writers, and continues to work with teen poets as an organizer for Freeverse!, Lowell’s youth poetry group.⁠

While Douglas was not at the first Poetry Jam at the Lizard Lounge, he came along soon after, and has been jamming and slamming at the venue for more than 20 years. She is a graduate of Yale University. She is an Environmental Studies major with a specialization in environmental justice and food rights. Her work confronts Black environments and imaginaries, exploring the legacies of trauma and resistance in diasporic communities. She has been published in Atlas&Alice Magazine, The Journal, Pilgrimage Press, Sage Magazine, Brushfire Literature & Arts, and The Hopper Magazine, among others. She is a 2019 PEN America Writing for Justice Finalist. She released her first chapbook, We Bleed Like Mango, in October of 2017. Maya Williams (she/they) is a black mixed-race queer suicide survivor residing in Portland, ME. She has been published in venues such as The Occulum Journal, glitterMOB, Black Table Arts, Maps for Teeth, The Frost Meadow Review, Portland Press Herald, and more. The sold-out theatrical spoken word showcase “When Speaking to an Extraterrestrial” has been described by PortFringe as “an intimate voice to the broader experiences of marginalized people.” They were also a runner up of Slam Free or Die’s Individual Slam Championship in 2018. She received residencies at the Words of Fire and Hewnoaks Artist Colony retreats. You can find them organizing for one of the longest-running open mics in Portland, Port Veritas, Tuesday nights, as well as leading writing workshops Sunday mornings at Quill Books & Beverage in Westbrook.

Maya received her MFA in poetry from Warren Wilson's MFA Program for Writers and her BFA in writing, literature, and publishing, with a concentration in poetry, from Emerson College, where she served as SlamMaster of the Emerson College Poetry Project and competed at College Union Poetry Slam International (CUPSI) as a member of the 2010 and 2011 slam teams. In 2011, she represented the Boston Poetry Slam at the National Poetry Slam as a member of the Cantab slam team. Her poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in At Length, BOAAT, Ghost Proposal, Hayden's Ferry Review, Vinyl, The Gettysburg Review, The New York Times Magazine, and The Rumpus, among others, and her arts & entertainment journalism has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vulture, Mashable, Slate, The Week, American Theatre, and more. Her debut poetry collection, Erou, is forthcoming in fall 2019 from Four Way Books. A former content editor & producer at the Academy of American Poets, Maya currently works as a web producer at The New Yorker and as a freelance writer. She lives in Brooklyn.

I am passionate about education, youth mentoring, community building, and urban renewal. I have always had a deep respect and passion for teaching, cultural diversity and social justice.⁠
While all this sounds lofty, I generally write about love things and sex things.
