Joyce Cunha is an educator and activist who grew up in Somerville and now lives in Dorchester. She is a Coordinator of Special Education in the Boston Public Schools and was a special education teacher for 12 years prior to that. Before becoming a teacher, she was an accomplished community and political organizer, most notably as a key leader in the pro choice movement. She has also done organizing for tenants’ rights, welfare rights, women’s rights, and to elect various progressive candidates. She is a co-host of the Lizard Lounge Poetry Slam where she is affectionately known as SlamMama.
