Marlon Carey is a Poet Educator Actor Communicator Entertainer. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Creative Writing, from St. Andrews College in Laurinburg, NC. Carey has taught Poetry and Creative Writing workshops in schools for several years in the New England Area. Named “Best Hip Hop Poet” by the Cambridge Poetry Awards two years in a row, he has also been the Boston Cantab Lounge’s “Grand Slam Champion” and the Lizard Lounge Boston’s “King.”
Marlon is a proud member of Providence-based poetry theatre ensemble, Brother’s Keeper. Carey has also been a producer and radio DJ on Off Tha Top, a radio show that has been running for over four years on 88.1FM Brown University’s BSRlive.com online radio station.
In theater, Carey has been in major plays such as The Sunset Limited, Topdog/Underdog and Shakespeare’s Othello, (in which he played the character Iago with great success). He has been in When Mahalia Sings, with Mixed Magic Theatre, Sortilegio with Brown University’s Rites and Reason Theatre, and Take Me Out with 2nd Story Theatre in Warren, RI.
Marlon has published three chapbooks: Giraffe Theory (2000), Prolegomenon (2003) and Lazarus (St. Andrews College Press, 2007). He has also released several EPs of music, which include poetry and hip-hop tracks. His latest musical project is a Mixtape (currently untitled) that includes kid-friendly hip-hop, (the song “cat leash” and a hip-hop version of Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” for instance) which he largely produced in his home studio.
